The very long horn provides stable driver loading down to the lowest frequencies. The "box-free" design avoids the tendencies of rapid low frequency roll-off and driver unloading that occurs below resonance in all vented boxes. It also avoids the low frequency roll-off and terrible dynamic smother associated with all sealed boxes (this includes horn cabinets that include a sealed or vented driver sub-enclosure). The result is, that along with their unrivaled clarity and definition, MAD VFL-18 Subwoofers provide unparalleled low frequency extension. Thanks to this breakthrough design, the distortion and coloration found in other types of horns have been eliminated. Also, eliminated are most transient inter-modulation and cone break-up distortions. Unlike boxes, the MAD VFL-18 Subwoofer uses no resonating energy to supplement the output. Coupled to each MAD VFL-18 Subwoofer is a custom designed powerful single 18" very high excursion, low distortion woofer. The woofer has an aluminum edge wound 4” underhung coil. It uses unique low distortion neodymium motor structure with more than 1200W RMS of long term power handling which enables extremely high 3.5” p-p cone excursion. The driver has a detachable magnet structure and it can be field serviced in under 20 minutes if necessary.
